But thanks for the physical, overt example of how the gay community sometimes loves to take a massive shit on you if you’re bisexual, be it trying to tell you things like “it’s just a stepping stone”, or being outright hostile and dismissive toward you for reasons like “you don’t understand  us because you can reintegrate into normal society”.

No I can’t. Not when I have a girlfriend. Nor would I want to leave her simply to have it “easier”, as is often assumed; I do not see her as a dead weight, an anathema, or someone who is the cause of me losing a privilege. If I did, I wouldn’t deserve to have her in my life.

In fact, thanks for the example of how bisexuals often sometimes have it, since they are excluded from both “sides” by those who want to make a cause about themselves alone. I have received the hatred reserved for gays and the hatred reserved for the cis and I can say with certainty that both sides have been equally eager to reject me and dismiss how I identify.

I can say from personal experience that being a bisexual female allows you to experience a great deal of bullying; most often from those who fall all over themselves trying to claim to be inclusive of all.

Edit: And yes, for the record, he’s a douchebag.

Note how all examples of “acceptable” singers either have dicks or, gasp, are some “random ass lesbian” with a dick.

Hey Lexi!

It’s a pretty messy and complex situation, in that there are factors dating back to Israel’s founding 64 years ago that continue to contribute to every aspect of the situation.

But I’ll do my best for a brief “What’s happening now”.

The Gaza Strip is a tiny 4 by 23 mile strip of land along the Mediterranean that is home to 1.6 million Palestinians, 80% of whom are refugees who were forced into that corner when they were kicked out of their homes during Israel’s founding in 1948. 

In 2006, the US and Israel basically forced an election on the Palestinian people to decide what group would run the country, and the top two contenders were Fatah, which has a long-running history of aiding the Palestinian cause but have recently become nothing more than Western-Backed and funded cronies, and Hamas, which was basically a more radical group that was created as a response to Israeli aggressions and the lack of an armed, unified group to resist it.

The US and Israel were banking on Fatah winning, but instead, Hamas won, because it was basically an election of “The old and corrupt” against “The “not” old and corrupt”, and the Palestinian people wanted a change from the stalemate we had been stuck in with Fatah.

Because Israel and the US weren’t happy with the results, they funded and armed Fatah to “fight out” Hamas, who were democratically elected through an process that they pushed in the first place, which resulted in civil war, and Hamas being pushed into the Gaza Strip, where they currently rule, while Fatah retains control of the West Bank.

After the brief civil war, Israel imposed a siege on the Gaza strip, allowing no-one in or out, no medical/building supplies, food, clothing, or anything else without Israeli approval, which was never granted.

Fast-Forward, to 2012, the Gaza Strip is in shambled, people are dying of malnutrition, facing medical crises’ because they have no supplies, and are basically forced to merely “exist”, rather than to live as normal human beings. The siege is so severe, that Israel has literally set a calorie limit in which it dictated the amount of food that was allowed in that would keep people from just barely starving to death, with multiple reports stating that within 6 years, the Gaza Strip will be an unlivable region unless something drastic is done to save the area.

Last month, Israel “accidentally” killed a 13 year-old boy as he was playing soccer with his friends after a bullet struck his abdomen. Shortly after, they opened fire on a 23 year-old mentally disabled man who wondered too close to the “buffer zone” surrounding Gaza, and refused to allow anyone to treat his wounds, from which he could have been saved. He died shortly after.

In retaliation, the PFLP [another armed group within Palestine] launched a rocket attack on Israeli patrol forces near the border of Gaza, wounding 4. 

That attack is what Israel considers the “start” of the current conflict, while ignoring the previous two killings.

Israel responded by assassinating one of the top leader of Hamas and the Gaza Strip, who had at the time been drafting peace-plans towards Israel, despite having a history of terror attacks. 

Hamas then responded by launching many rockets into Israel, while Israel continued to launch relentless, punishing air-strikes on the Gaza Strip. Due to the fact that the strip is so small and so crowded, and due to Israeli use of massive missiles in their strikes, no where is safe within the strip, and no one is allowed to even leave. There are no places to seek shelter, no places to hide, and nothing to do but stay in place and pray that you’re not the next piece of “collateral damage”

In the last 4 days, 73 Palestinians have been killed, with early reports claiming 21 children, 9 women [two of whom were pregnant] and 6 elderly among them, with an estimated 700 injured [with injuries ranging from mutilations resulting in physical disabilities, broken bones, or other less extreme tragedies], of which 150 are children. 

In the same time frame, 3 Israeli civilians have been killed from the same blast on Thursday. 

While Israelis have an active missile defense system called “Iron Dome”, which shoots down rockets, along with sirens to warn of incoming rockets and when to seek bomb shelters to protect themselves from the home-made rockets of Hamas, those in Gaza are subject to shelling by land, air and sea. 

There have been talks that the conflict could escalate and that Israel may send troops within the Gaza Strip, which is a source of great fear, considering the last ground invasion Israel launched resulted in the deaths of 1400 Palestinians, between 750 and 930 of which were civilians, while Israeli forces lost 10 combatants [4 to friendly fire] and 3 civilians.

I know this is a exhausting wall of text so I’m sorry about that, but I tried to cover all the bases of the conflict so that I can have this here for future reference.

So I’m tooling around in a somewhat blue mood, doing some research for NaNo and I am all of a sudden learning all sorts of cool things about binary stars.

Like the two stars are called the primary and the companion.

And there are things called cataclysmic variables, which are stars that suddenly get really bright and then go back to normal.

And the Roche lobe is the area in space around a star where the material is gravitationally bound to that star. Like not planets but more like the boundary between earth and space. That.

And when one star gets bigger than the other in its evolution, it gives some of its matter to the smaller star in what’s called a Roche lobe overflow.

And if two binary systems get too close to each other, they can affect each other catastrophically, causing one star to be ejected from both systems at a high velocity, and this star is called a runaway star.

SCIENCE IS FULL OF SUCH COOL WORDS AND SUCH BEAUTIFUL CONCEPTS. Like the Roche lobe overflow, why does that have me tearing up IDGI.

And the worst part is that when I took astronomy in college, we talked about none of this and I spent the whole time sleeping and now I’m sad.

Yes, there are books on the matter but eh, tossing some things out from my creative writing class: people like characters for their flaws, not their merits. The goal is not at the start to make them likable per say, as garner a reaction.

If you can get the audience to react, to feel something for the character, liking them will automatically come after that with no effort required.

You have to remember, distinct, flawed, human. Having them be too perfect or nice won’t be memorable, because as the saying goes: the squeaky wheel/gear gets the grease. Make them someone that gets a reaction, even if it’s by doing something horrible, or a lot of horrible things (hi Mephisto).

Get people to empathize with the character, see something of themselves in them, avoid them being even close to perfect at all costs. It’s key, I’ve found.

• Use the hand you write with.

• Make a fist with your thumb outside, not tucked inside. If it’s tucked inside your fist, when you punch someone, you might break your thumb. The thumb goes across your fingers, not on the side.

• Don’t be like in the movies—don’t aim for the face. Face punches don’t usually stop people, and you can miss when they duck their head or break your hand on their jaw. If you want to get away quickly, or end a fight, aim for the chest, or the ribs. If you really want to do some damage, e.g., you’re being attacked, aim for the throat, which will make it hard for your attacker to breathe for a hot minute.

• When you punch, you want to aim and hit with your first two knuckles. Not the flats of your fingers, and not your ring or pinky knuckles, which can break more easily. You can use your weight, if you’re on your feet, to add wallop, and spring into a punch with your feet and torso.

Useful information, esp. if you haven’t taken self defense.

You can also risk breaking your wrist if you allow it to bend.  I actually can’t believe this isn’t in there.

Other good pointers:

• if your attacker is male, go for his junk - especially if he’s wearing loose pants. There’s no sportsmanship when it comes to assault so fuck them balls UP
• punching pretty much ANYWHERE in the face is going to actually hurt you a LOT (just think - you’re punching your bones into their bones and ow). If you’re going for the face, my suggestion is to strick upwards with your palm.

see that meaty portion highlighted in red? There’s a lot of muscle and fat right there which makes it excellent for striking. Hold your hand as shown and aim for the nose or chin (though I’ve been told in extreme circumstances, doing this to the nose can be fatal but I’ve never really heard if this is true or not) and just aim upwards

• other delicate areas: 
• the shin (hurts like a bitch if you kick it right - also, you can hit this spot if you’re being held in a choke-hold and if your attacker has to move in order to stop you from kicking him, he’ll have to angle his body so as to expose his stomach and crotch to the wild spastic jabbings of your elbows)

• the solar plexus (either jab while holding your hand in a sort of spear position or use your elbows - unless you’re super strong, your punch probably won’t wind your attacker. Your elbow or a spear hand will, however)

Originally in (most) martial arts, you hit the solar plexus because it supposedly contained an important chakra. Now we know that it actually also contains like a bunch of necessary organs that are exposed just below your ribs and is also (roughly) where your diaphragm lives so getting punched there is not pleasant.

• the clavicle (from experience, getting hit in your clavicle HURTS LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER. If you strike downwards with your knuckles, the person might just cry. Like I did.)

• the ear (this is probably the best place to punch besides the throat. It’s all cartilage so it probably won’t hurt you all that much and most people will be like “DUDE YOU PUNCHED ME IN THE EAR WHAT THE HELL”)
• the kidneys (this is harder to hit without training but if you somehow get your attacker’s back to face you, try to hit’em in the kidneys. Again, from experience, this FUCKING HURTS. You can’t really hit the kidneys from the front with any effect but from the back it is super painful)

• if you’re held in a choke-hold, try turning your head so the forearm isn’t pressed into your throat. If you can position yourself right, you can sort of force your chin into the crook of the elbow, making you able to still receive (limited) oxygen and provide time for you to kick some shins or elbow some spleens and shit

-Also, remember that a guy’s junk is not an off-button. Don’t think that you can rely on a swift kick to the balls to immediately incapacitate him in an emergency. Adrenaline and anger can keep somebody going for a long time even through extreme pain, and if you expect to end a fight with a single groin-attack you might be caught off-guard when he doesn’t drop. Certainly go for it if you get the chance, but keep hitting him until the fight is over.

-Draw blood if you can, especially if you can draw it from the face or the eyes. Blood in the eyes is not just a good way to impair your attacker’s vision, it’s also a really good way to freak them out and let them know that they might be getting more than they bargained for by picking a fight with you.

-Elbows and knees are really powerful weapons. Elbows are very sharp and very strong and if you are in close-range they are often more effective than trying to throw a punch. 

-Yelling and shouting makes you scary. 

-The tops of people’s feet are actually quite delicate, so a well-placed heel ramming down can break all those little bones (especially if you’re wearing heavy shoes or heels)

-It only takes 7 pounds of pressure to break a collarbone/clavicle. And I know from personal experience that getting your collarbone broken is HORRIBLE. Hitting someone with the heel of your hand or punching them may be enough to at least fracture it.

-If their arms are bare, try pinching the tendon on the inside of their elbow as hard as you can. In the self defence class I took, they told a story about how one girl actually ripped out her attacker’s tendons.

-There’s not much sense in fighting clean. Bite, scratch, pull their hair. Pull their ears. Earrings? Rip ‘em out. 

-Smacking your cupped palms really hard over someone’s ears like this can disorient  them and with enough force, burst their eardrums.

-Practice “power yelling”. Here’s a good site about it.

-And like my mum always told me, if you don’t feel safe, keep your keys between your fingers. Like Wolverine. No one wants a punch from Wolverine.

IMPORTANT

Everyone should know how to defend themselves. Your voice is a powerful tool, yell and scream and shout. I keep my keys on a lanyard, instead of doing the whole keys between the knuckles thing. That implies you have to get close enough to this person to hit them with your fist, but a lanyard full of keys when swung with some force really packs a hit.

YES to keys on a lanyard. Whenever I used to have to walk home from work in the dark when I lived in Detroit, I kept my big bunch of keys on a lanyard and fucking swung the hell out of it as I walked.
